It’s been almost three months since Chase Stokes and Kelsea Ballerini’s breakup was confirmed, but that hasn’t stopped fans from talking about the Outer Banks actor and the country star’s romance.
This time, however, chatter seemed to have gone a bit too far when fans flooded the comments section of one of Ballerini’s TikTok posts seemingly reading into the lyrics of some of her songs from her brand new EP, Mount Pleasant, released on Friday, Nov. 14. That video post, uploaded on Monday, Nov. 17, featured Ballerini mouthing out the lyrics to her vulnerable track “People Pleaser.”
“So what does it mean? Keeps getting sadder / Was it sixteen that made me not matter?” Ballerini can be seen singing before transforming a low-key look of a headband and sweater into a vibrant red dress with a matching lip shade. “Was it Logan or Robby? Cheer captain named Carly / That made the cut deeper and messed up my body? / I’ll keep being sweeter, but at my demise / Call me people pleaser and damn if they’re right / Damn it, they’re right.”
The 32-year-old Knoxville native also included the caption: “For my fellow people pleasers. I see you.”
While Ballerini’s post was simply made to promote the music on her EP, it appears fans thought otherwise, with some name-checking Stokes in the video’s comments section.
“These comments are F—ing weird. Grow up,” Stokes reacted, though it’s unclear which comments the 33-year-old star was referring to.
Many fans and followers were confused at Stokes’ reaction, while others took time to try and connect the dots, with one person alleging, “@hellominie: OBX [Outer Banks] fans were posting nonsense and Chase called them out so they deleted it. But now they’re commenting on old photos of Chase and [Madelyn] Cline when they were a couple… that’s so sick.”

Madelyn Cline, 27, who also stars on Outer Banks, previously dated Stokes from 2020 to 2021 before he and Ballerini sparked a romance together. According to Taste of Country, some went as far as to speculate about some of the other tracks on Mount Pleasant, like “Emerald City,” which includes the lyrics: “I always liked the color of my eyes ’til I knew she had brown / I’m green/ Always liked my naive innocence ’til I learned she got around / I’m green. / If I got you, why does she still get me? / I hate to say it, but damn, she’s pretty / Never known this shade of envy / Just tell me I’m your Emerald City.”
“So now it’s OK for Kelsea to be calling Madelyn a red flag and how she goes around to many [guys]. Wow, I’m sure Madelyn is pi–ed at you both, Chase and Kelsea. Idiots,” one follower wrote, per the outlet.
Earlier this month, Ballerini and Stokes reunited in Croatia and were spotted holding hands, though they haven’t disclosed whether or not they are currently romantically involved.
