Everyone’s been guessing how the Chiefs keep winning away from home — until Mahomes quietly revealed the truth.QQ

The Kansas City Chiefs have a pivotal road matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Playing in Buffalo is never fun for opposing teams, and the Chiefs have to do so on a short week after just playing on Monday Night Football.
With how great Kansas City’s home field advantage is, most would rather have this game played at home. However, the Chiefs have been almost as good on the road as they have been at home since Patrick Mahomes took over at quarterback in 2018. Is there a secret to that? The answer is pretty simple — Patrick Mahomes.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has better statistics in road games than at home throughout his career
Mahomes has started 60 regular season games both at home and on the road during his nine-year NFL career. Let’s take a look at the numbers.
Mahomes’ home stats
- 48-12 record
- 65.64 percent completion percentage
- 16,796 passing yards
- 134 total touchdowns
- 99.5 QB rating
- 1,202 rushing yards
Mahomes’ away stats
- 46-14 record
- 67.63 percent completion percetnage
- 17,655 passing yards
- 146 total touchdowns
- 104.8 QB rating
- 1,321 rushing yards
The Chiefs have won two less games on the road than at home during the Mahomes era, but his stats are significantly better in every major category. While speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mahomes credited the team’s “us against the world” mindset during road games.
“Even more than the football games, just being on the plane and then being in the the hotel, you build this culture in this team,” Mahomes said. “So it’s cool whenever you step on that football field and everybody’s against you. Having your brothers behind you, and it takes everybody, I think it’s been special that we’ve been able to play these road games and win these games. It’s because this team comes together and we go out there and play our best football, even on the road.”
The Chiefs have played two more home games than away this season, so Mahomes’ numbers are obviously slanted in that favor so far. However, his season-high in passing yards (318) came against the Jaguars in Jacksonville.
K.C. is 1-2 on the road so far in 2025. Its last away game was a 31-28 loss to the Jaguars, but followed that up with a 3-0 homestand. Hopefully the Chiefs can get back to their winning ways on the road, as three of their next four games will be away from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
