Nothing will turn Philadelphia Phillies fans’ stomachs more than potentially having to face left-hander Tarik Skubal in the NL East in the near future. Skubal is coming off back-to-back AL Cy Young wins with the Detroit Tigers and is showing no signs of slowing down in 2026, his last year of arbitration before free agency.

Skubal will have eyes on him all winter, with him set to haul in a massive payday after 2026. Naturally, his name has surfaced in trade rumors to see what team would be willing to completely unload their farm system for even just one year of Skubal, not to mention the hundreds of millions to re-sign him. Per Spotrac, he’s expected to make around $22.5 million in 2026.

Bold trade prediction of Tarik Skubal landing with the Mets would be devastating to the Phillies

MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince recently published several bold predictions for the 2025-26 offseason. Big moves are sure to come, and that includes his projection that the Mets will make a massive splash and trade for the 29-year-old Skubal to inject him into the already staunch NL East.

The Phillies have their own solid starting rotation and a lineup filled with All-Stars, but facing Skubal with the Mets would be nothing short of a bitter feeling. The Phillies just fended off the Braves for two straight division titles, with Chris Sale coming back to life for his first Cy Young Award in 2024.

The Mets were a challenge in the division earlier this season even without a real ace. The Phillies having to face Skubal as a NL East rival would give the Mets a massive boost in their odds for the division in 2026.

Skubal finished 2025 with a 13-6 record, a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts in 195 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, the Mets’ starting rotation fell apart in the second-half, posting a 5.31 ERA in 65 games, which was the catalyst for their 83-win season and missed postseason berth.

Mets owner Steve Cohen may just get the itch to solve all of that with just one blockbuster trade. As many believe, Skubal won’t come cheap. The Mets would have to deal a load of prospects and possibly some MLB talent, like Nolan McLean. It pays to be a top team in baseball, but it also costs a lot as well. The Phillies know that well with the stars they’ve had to pay for.

The Mets may not be a World Series threat with just one trade, but Skubal is a different animal. There are few pitchers like him, and if Cohen is willing to give away anything to make that happen, the Phillies better be ready to have an answer.
