⚡ FLASH NEWS: A 3-year, $37M pact brings Tyler Rogers to the Blue Jays, and the ripple effects for Toronto’s pitching plan are immediate ⚡.NL

It’s the final month of 2025, but the Toronto Blue Jays are making their calendar year more eventful.
Over a week after the Blue Jays signed starting pitcher Dylan Cease to a seven-year deal, the defending American League champions added a major arm to their bullpen.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Toronto signed right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers to a three-year, $37 million contract. The deal includes a vesting option for a fourth year, which would bolster the value of the deal to $48 million, according to Rosenthal’s report.

Rogers, who’ll turn 35-years-old Dec. 17, made his major league debut in 2019 with the San Francisco Giants and spent the better part of seven seasons in the Bay Area. He was traded by the Giants to the New York Mets on July 30.

Across this past season with San Francisco and New York, Rogers posted a 1.98 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched across 81 appearances. It was his fifth year in a row with at least 68 outings and the second time in that span Rogers took the mound in at least 80 games. It was the third time during that stretch he had a sub-3.00 ERA.
Rogers is one of the slowest-throwing pitchers in baseball. He has an average fastball velocity of 83.5 mph which ranks in the bottom percentile of baseball, according to Baseball Savant.

Rogers has never thrown a pitcher in the 90-mph range, but he’s carved out a solid major league career with unique submarine delivery.

That delivery, and Rogers’ two-pitch approach of a two-seam fastball (sinker) and rising slider, has made him one of the best relievers in baseball in terms of inducing soft contact.
According to Baseball Savant, Rogers allows an average exit velocity of 85.8 mph, has a walk-rate of 2.3%, a barrel rate of 2.1%, a hard-hit rate of 33.1% and a ground ball rate of 61.6%. Those marks rank in the 99th, 100th, 100th, 95th and 98th percentile in baseball, respectively.

Rogers will likely be a fluid middle- and late-inning option for the Blue Jays. His penchant for inducing weak contact will play a major factor in the American League East, which includes notable sluggers and hitters like back-to-back American League MVP Aaron Judge, former All-Star Jarren Duran, Junior Caminero, and newly-signed Baltimore Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso.

Toronto could not be done adding marquee names to the team. The Blue Jays are also considered the favorites to land outfielder Kyle Tucker and shortstop Bo Bichette.
