Kansas City Chiefs fans are still wondering what the heck happened on Monday night. The defense, which had been playing incredibly well since Week 2, suddenly couldn’t stop anything the Jaguars were doing.

This obviously includes what was the game-winning touchdown run by Trevor Lawrence where he fell down multiple times but was still able to somehow get across the end zone. Maddening.

Chris Jones’ effort was questioned on this play and deservedly so. There’s no excuse for Lawrence falling to the ground not just once but twice and somehow still being able to score there. Pathetic effort all around for the Chiefs defense here.

When asked what happened on the play, Jones talked about how this defense needs to be able to finish plays.

“I thought multiple times we had him. We just got to finish. We got to finish. We had multiple guys there that we just got to finish that play. It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles.”

Chris Jones sums up Chiefs’ frustration after Trevor Lawrence’s shocking score

This play certainly didn’t make the Chiefs defense look good but they had been sloppy all night. It was a very uncharacteristic performance for Steve Spagnuolo’s crew and hopefully something that gets polished up before a big game against the Lions this Sunday night.

Jones pounded the drum here for the Chiefs needing to finish plays but he falls into that category too. He was extended to that big contract to finish plays like this so he needs to be practicing what he’s preaching. For what it’s worth, the Chiefs pass-rusher deleted his social media following the game, probably because of the criticism he was receiving for not finishing things off there.

A lot can be learned from this dud of a performance but Jones is right here. If the Chiefs can finish things off, there’s no reason they won’t be able to right the ship. That’s the hope at least.
