Willie received his 5th-degree black belt in GongKwon Yusul at the age of 81. Yup, black belt. He’s been practicing martial arts since his younger days, first learning Kung Fu before diving into GongKwon Yusul and Taekwondo during downtime on tour.

He says, “I still try to do a little workout every day just to pay for the day.” That could be walking, jogging, or just moving enough to get the heart going. The practice doesn’t just keep him fit — it gives him courage, clarity, and motivation.

But staying strong isn’t just about muscles. Willie swears by the power of the mind. “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results,” he says. And research agrees — optimistic people tend to live longer, healthier lives.

As for food? Willie keeps it light. “I don’t eat a lot, really,” he admits. His meals include simple favorites: eggs, toast, waffles, the occasional stew, and a few protein shakes. He stays hydrated and has cut way back on alcohol — just an occasional shot of tequila here and there.

Willie was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas, and has been making music for over 70 years. With his signature guitar “Trigger” in hand, he’s performed more than 10,000 shows — blending country, blues, jazz, and folk like no one else.
