The Eagles Organization Has Rallied Behind Quinyon Mitchell in a Way That Speaks Louder Than Words

Geoffrey A Knox, Eagles Wire

Sunday wasn’t Quinyon Mitchll’s best day at the office. The Philadelphia Eagles star earned a 46.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. That was the lowest mark he had received through five games, one comprised of coverage, tackling, and run defense grades of 50.3, 53.9, and 37.0, respectively.

PFF puts a lot into its statistical engine. Some swear by it. Some say their grades don’t provide an accurate take on how well or poorly a player is performing. It is, however, easy to find value in what they present. They don’t mean everything, but they certainly don’t mean nothing.

Here’s where we are on Mitchell’s recent performance. He had a tough day versus Courtland Sutton, and that’s no reason to sell any of his stock. The world hasn’t ended, and life will undoubtedly go on. If asked to travel with the opposing team’s top receiver, this is some of what can be expected. Sometimes, he will win, and sometimes, he’ll lose.

Here’s what we do know. More often than not, he has aced the PFF test. By their tally, he has been targeted 36 times, allowing 18 receptions, 168 yards receiving, and zero touchdowns, but his most prominent supporters are all part of the Eagles organization. Two members of its leadership structure showed their support in different ways on Tuesday.

Add Vic Fangio and Jalen Hurts’ names to the Quinyon Mitchell fan club.

It’s a short week this time around. For the second time this season, Philadelphia kicks a week’s slate of games off on Thursday. This time, the opponent is the New York Giants. Both sides meet for the 186th time historically.

In preparation, quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Nick Foles, along with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, were made available to the Philadelphia media. Hurts showed up wearing a ‘Quinyonamo Bay’ T-shirt. Fangio was asked about his second-year cornerbacks’ up-and-down affair this past Sunday, and he wasn’t stingy in his praise of Mr. Mitchell.

“He was on him highly contested. They made the play. We didn’t.” When asked if it was too big an ask to request Mitchell to constantly shadow the other team’s top wide receiver, Fangio was very matter-of-fact… “I don’t think so.”

Let’s make long stories short. Rumors of any Quinyon Mitchell demise are greatly exaggerated. There are tons of good football games that are left to be played, and this young man’s best days are still ahead of him. He hasn’t begun to scratch the surface of how good he can be.
