Patrick Mahomes faces the man who once shaped his rise — and now stands in his way under the Monday night lights.QQ

A trip down memory lane for Mahomes on Monday night.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will see a familiar face on the Washington Commanders’ sideline on Monday night.
His collegiate coach, Kliff Kingsbury, is currently the offensive coordinator for Washington. Kingsbury was the head man at Texas Tech from 2013-2018, where Mahomes attended between 2014-2016. Mahomes started 29 games under Kingsbury during that span, throwing for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns, also adding 820 rushing yards and 22 rushing TDs.

The two didn’t have a ton of success as far as winning games goes, compiling a 13-16 overall record. However, they consistently had one of the most explosive and productive offenses in the nation. The development of Mahomes eventually landed Kingsbury an NFL head coaching job for the Arizona Cardinals, which he held from 2019-2022.
Although Kingsbury didn’t last long in Arizona, he immediately made the Commanders’ offense a juggernaut in 2024 as he helped develop QB Jayden Daniels into the Offensive Rookie of the Year. While speaking to the media on Thursday, Mahomes shared some memories about the time he spent with Kingsbury at Texas Tech.
Patrick Mahomes credits Kliff Kingsbury for helping him becoming the player he is today
“He’s one of the first people I would say that truly believed in me in playing the quarterback position,” Mahomes said of Kingsbury. “He gave me a ton of advice. [He] refined me, but let me still be just me and play to my strengths. [He’s] a great coach, a great person I still stay in touch with. Not as much this week, but throughout my career. He helped me get to where I’m at today, because he didn’t put me in a box and tell me I need to play quarterback this way. He let me go out there and be myself, and play the way that got me there. I think that’s something that is special about him as a coach.”
Monday night won’t be the first time Mahomes squares off against Kingsbury. The two met during the 2022 regular season opener when Kingsbury was with the Cardinals. Kansas City won handily that day by a score of 44-21. Mahomes had a tremendous game, completing 83 percent of his passes for 360 yards and five TDs. If he has another performance like that, the Chiefs will likely win, and Mahomes will remain the favorite for MVP.
