After acquiring defensive end Keion White in a blockbuster trade with the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers continued to add to the defensive line with the signing of former No. 4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the 49ers signed Clelin Ferrell to their practice squad after working out the Clemson product. Ferrell, who was drafted fourth overall by the Raiders in 2019, spent the 2023 season with the 49ers.
The 49ers have been hit hard by the injury bug this season, and it was only a matter of time before GM John Lynch started making additions. On defense, the 49ers have already lost superstar defensive end Nick Bosa (torn ACL) and All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner (dislocated ankle) for the season.
Coming off a frustrating 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans, the 5-3 49ers will try and get back into the win column when they visit the New York Giants on Sunday.
Clelin Ferrell Gets Another Chance To Revive His Career
The Raiders reached big time for Ferrell in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he never lived up to expectations in Sin City. After tallying just 10 sacks over his first four seasons with the Raiders, Ferrell landed with the 49ers in 2023 and logged 3.5 sacks, helping them to a Super Bowl 58 appearance.
49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh knows how to get the most out of his players, and Ferrell should get every opportunity to re-emerge as a quality starter with the 49ers missing so many key pieces.
If Ferrell gets extended playing time on the banged-up 49ers defense, he just might turn it up a notch under Saleh and display the best football of his career.
