The Philadelphia Eagles needed cornerback depth, and general manager Howie Roseman made it happen.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles are acquiring cornerback Michael Carter and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the New York Jets. In exchange, Philly is sending wide receiver John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick to New York.

What makes the trade even better is that Carter wanted to come to Philly so bad that he agreed to delete the $5 million guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to complete the deal.

Carter, who was originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2021, spent his entire career in New York before this move. In a crowded cornerback room, Carter has started four of five games, tallying 14 tackles, including one for loss, and two passes defended so far this season.

Those numbers should only skyrocket in Philly since the Eagles could really use his presence. Sure, Carter has played primarily in the slot, but he has some experience on the outside, which could have been enough for the Eagles to make their move. It could also mean they have plans for Cooper DeJean to take more snaps on the outside.

It’s also worth noting that Howie and the Eagles had some help since Joe Douglas, who was the general manager of New York when they drafted Carter, works for Philly’s front office.

Trading for a solid CB was months in the making

It’s hard to ignore that the Eagles had to have had this trade planned for weeks or even months. They easily knew they were in trouble at cornerback when the guys they had on the roster were not living up to their expectations during training camp and the preseason.

At that time, however, there weren’t many quality cornerbacks up for grabs since teams needed time to let their own situations play out. That’s when the Eagles settled for Jakorian Bennett.

Bennett still has a lot to prove, but it’s clear the Eagles remained unsatisfied. That’s when the Eagles traded for Metchie, along with a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Texans, in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick.

The Eagles didn’t need another wide receiver at the time, but knowing Roseman, he knew he could use him for leverage down the road. And that’s what they did.

Of course, this is all speculation, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that Roseman is brilliant.
