George Strait Just Marked an Anniversary That Reminds Us Why He’ll Always Be the King. ML

Some songs have a way of instantly pulling you back in time. With just a few opening notes, and suddenly you’re reliving a memory you didn’t realize was tucked away.
For millions of country fans, George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” is one of those songs.
Released in 1995 as part of Strait’s “Strait Out of the Box” set, the tune quickly became a staple on country radio and a fan favorite at live shows. The sweet story follows a boy and girl, beginning with childhood crushes and playground games, then moving through marriage and family life—all while holding on to the “stars in their eyes.” Strait delivers it with the kind of sincerity that made him the “King of Country Music.”

Listen to it again in this September 18 Instagram from @georgestrait:
Written by Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black, “Check Yes or No” was actually their first major cut and their first chart-topping hit. According to Wide Open Country, Hunt Black had carried the idea with her when she moved to Nashville, but it didn’t come to life until she and Wells were in a writing session, struggling with another song that wasn’t working. In a moment of frustration, they scrapped that tune and turned to her little idea instead. From there, the chorus spilled out, and magic was made.
The song eventually landed in George Strait’s hands, and he knew right away it was something special.

Wide Open Country notes that in an interview with CMT, Strait even shared that he couldn’t wait to play it for his young son, Bubba. As soon as Bubba heard it, he smiled from ear to ear, and Strait felt confident they had a hit. He was right. Soon, “Check Yes or No” went on to become Strait’s 28th No. 1 single on the Billboard Country chart, joining classics like “Love Without End, Amen” and “I Cross My Heart.”
