Dallas Makes a Bold Move by Targeting a Recent 1,000-Yard Rusher in a Trade That Could Put Them Back on Top of the NFC East.QQ

The Dallas Cowboys are staring down a running back problem, and things just got serious. Miles Sanders is out for the year, and Dallas suddenly looks a bit too thin behind Javonte Williams. Williams has been phenomenal, sitting third in the NFL in rushing yards heading into Week 6 with 447. But one man can only do so much.

Jaydon Blue and Hunter Luepke have barely touched the ball this season. That’s it for the Cowboys’ backfield depth. For a team trying to claw its way back from a shaky 2-2-1 start, that’s not enough. Dallas needs something more. Maybe even a familiar veteran experience. And that’s where Raheem Mostert’s name starts to heat up.

Just weeks after signing former Green Bay Packer Corey Ballentine before Week 4, the Cowboys may be planning another smart move, this time targeting a proven running back.

The Raiders’ 33-year-old back still has gas left in the tank. Mostert rushed for over 1,000 yards and led the league with 21 touchdowns just last season. Now he’s stuck behind rookie Ashton Jeanty in Las Vegas, and his workload has vanished. Through five games, he’s logged just 11 carries for 84 yards. That’s 7.6 yards a pop, by the way.

He’s cheap, too. His one-year deal carries a modest $1.6 million cap hit. For a team like Dallas, that’s pocket change for the production he could bring. Mostert’s playoff pedigree is another plus — no one forgets his 220-yard, four-touchdown explosion in the 2019 NFC title game.

Cowboys Wire’s Todd Brock summed it up perfectly: “The loss of Sanders leaves the Cowboys rather thin at the position.” He added that making a move for an experienced back “just became a priority.” And he’s right. With Malik Davis on the practice squad and rookie Phil Mafah still on short-term IR, this roster needs help now.

Las Vegas sits at 1-4 and looks ready to sell. A conditional 2026 sixth-round pick could get the deal done, maybe a fifth if Mostert racks up solid yardage.

Adding Mostert won’t solve all their problems, but Dallas would get a reliable veteran. After signing players like former Super Bowl champ WR Parris Campbell to fill in for CeeDee Lamb, another low-cost, high-upside move could help stabilize the team.

Sometimes, the best trades aren’t the ones that have flashy names, they’re the ones that make a good team whole again.
