I’m not sure anyone is surprised. Since the NFL schedule was revealed back in May, it was clear the league was calling upon the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs to set a new record for the most-watched regular season game ever. The plan was simple.
Put America’s most popular team and one of the winningest in recent years on Thanksgiving, where the Cowboys consistently dominate ratings regardless of opponent. That parlayed with a great script—Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes trying to get keep their team’s playoff hopes alive—and an electric 31-28 football game secured the NFL’s goal.
Cowboys WR George Pickens has been showing his route tree off this season…
On Wednesday, CBS confirmed Cowboys vs Chiefs had blown previous records out of the water. Per their press release, the game had 57.23 million viewers, shattering the previous record by 36%. The ratings were 47% higher compared to last year. It is now considered the most-watched regular season game ever.
Cowboys are still America’s Team and move forward with its ‘soap opera’
In a Netflix documentary released earlier this year, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits he treats his team like a soap opera 365 days a year. The comment caused mixed reactions from the fans, who consider most of the drama surrounding the team as unnecessary and harmful to the team’s team-building approach. An example of this has been drawn-out—sometimes hostile—contract negotiations with superstars.
And yet, even if still far from ideal, this mindset is probably what’s keeping the Cowboys in the 2025 playoff picture. With his team at 3-5-1 at the bye week, Jones had his Cowboys be buyers instead of sellers at the trade deadline, most notably dealing away a first-round pick and second-round pick to land All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
Well, a record-breaking audience witnessed Williams had his third good game as a Cowboy against the Chiefs, helping his team secure a winning record for the first time this year. Hopefully for the Cowboys, the season finale of Jones’ soap opera doesn’t come in Week 18.
