In the heart of Santiago, Dominican Republic, a young Christopher Morel learned early that dreams were worth more than possessions. His family lived humbly—electricity came and went, and meals were often uncertain—but hope never ran out. He refused to quit, training harder than ever to regain his strength and sharpen his instincts. “They told me I was too small, too broken,” he once recalled. “So I decided to become too good to ignore.”
That resilience caught the attention of the Chicago Cubs, who took a chance on him — a move that would change both their futures.
The Long Road to the Majors
Morel’s climb through the Cubs’ minor league system was anything but glamorous. The days were long, the pay was low, and the travel was endless. He slept on cramped buses, lived out of cheap motels, and spent late nights studying English so he could connect with his coaches and teammates.
Through it all, he never lost faith. “Every bus ride, I told myself, one day this road will lead to Wrigley,” he said.
That moment came in 2021, when the Cubs called him up to the Major Leagues.
A Star is Born
Under the bright lights of Wrigley Field, Morel stepped up for his first MLB at-bat — nerves racing, heart pounding. On the very first pitch he saw, he connected. The ball rocketed toward the stands, and the crowd erupted.
