American Idol’s John Foster Honors Toby Keith With a Moving Tribute in Oklahoma

When John Foster took the American Idol stage in May 2025 and belted out Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” it was more than a performance — it was a promise.

That patriotic powerhouse of a song helped the then-19-year-old earn second place on the show and launch a fast-rising country career that’s carried him from Los Angeles soundstages to the Grand Ole Opry.

Just months later, Foster found himself in Norman, Oklahoma, paying tribute to the man whose words helped inspire his journey.

🎶 A Quiet Moment, A Lasting Legacy

Foster performed at the Toby Keith Foundation’s Schooner Fall Classic, a multi-day event supporting the foundation’s OK Kids Korral, which provides free lodging for families of children undergoing cancer treatment.

Before taking the stage, Foster made a quiet detour — visiting Toby Keith’s memorial site. There, he shared photos of the gravestone draped in an engraved American flag, writing:

“It’s an absolute honor to take the stage tonight in Norman, OK for Toby Keith’s amazing foundation. We were also honored to spend a quiet moment at the legend’s resting place — a reminder of the incredible legacy he left behind.”

❤️ A Song That Still Speaks

Later that evening, Foster performed one of Keith’s most personal songs, “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” in front of Toby’s wife, Tricia, and daughter, Krystal.

Before beginning the stripped-down acoustic cover, the young singer told the crowd he was deeply moved when he first heard the song, calling it “powerful.”

As he sang, Tricia and Krystal bowed their heads — visibly emotional — before lifting them to applaud his heartfelt tribute. “You did a good job,” Tricia told him afterward.

The performance, captured on video and shared online, resonated with fans who saw it as both a passing of the torch and a celebration of a timeless message: keep living, keep loving, and don’t let the old man in.
