It was a mix of emotions on Tuesday’s episode of ABC World News Tonight as host David Muir interrupted the show to update viewers on the latest in the 20 hostages being released by Hamas.
Over the past few days the 51-year-old journalist had been reporting live from Hostage Square in Tel Aviv, but for Tuesday’s episode he was back in the ABC studio. Addressing viewers at home, David began, “A good evening. We are just back from the Middle East tonight, and now, just hours after the world witnessed those hostages being released, the ceasefire now being tested tonight.
“A new warning from President Trump for Hamas, demanding they disarm. Warning if they don’t disarm, we will disarm them, perhaps violently,” he went on. It comes after Hamas agreed to release all of its hostages under the new ceasefire agreement between Tel Aviv and Hamas.

David continued his report, “The president today praising the peace plan that he brokered to get Israel and Hamas to this point and to get those hostages home late today, Hamas releasing the bodies of four hostages who were killed in captivity, eight bodies now returned out of 28.
“Israel tonight, accusing Hamas of violating the truth by not releasing all of the remains for these families, an American family among those still waiting tonight. It comes after the final 20 living hostages were released,” the anchor added.

“We were there, of course, as the world witnessed these emotional returns tonight here, the horrific details now emerging about their brutal, two-year ordeal as captives of Hamas, ABC’s Chief Foreign Correspondent Ian Pannell, leading us off tonight from Tel Aviv,” David concluded as he handed over to his colleague. Clips then played of the scenes from Israel as Ian dished the latest on the situation.
A clip of the segment was shared on ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram along with the caption, “After the world witnessed the return of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, Pres. Trump warned Hamas that they must disarm, or the U.S. will disarm them, perhaps violently. Ian Pannell reports on the horror stories emerging from newly freed hostages.”
Viewers were quick to comment on the update, with one user admitting, “I’m very happy for the people that’s getting free, but I’m very scared for America. This might be worse because Trump is getting involved with everybody’s business. I don’t know why.”
A second user also pointed out, “Trump is going to get the US involved in a war if he doesn’t watch it,” with another adding, “Threatening violence doesn’t sound like much of a peace plan to me…”
“Threats of more violence…they’ll be more violent than all the war crime already committed through this genocide? How about liberation instead?” a fourth fumed.
While someone else argued, “He’s actually threatening the violent ones, as he should. how else would you deal with blood thirsty terrorists?! they don’t understand any language but violence!”
Despite the uncertainty, a sixth penned, “Happy to see people going back to their families,” followed by a white heart emoji.
