However, when it comes to his life away from the big bright lights of ABC News, not much is known about David’s private relationships. However, there is one constant companion he certainly doesn’t shy away from updating his 695k followers about: his beloved pet pooch Axel. The attention comes after David shared the heartbreaking reason why Diane Keaton didn’t get married.

Axel is an adorable German Shorthaired Pointer who is often featured on his social media, and they are sometimes seen together at his home in upstate New York.
David welcomed Axel when he was a puppy and often shares pictures of the sweet dog, including an adorable portrait to honor his 4th birthday that shows off not only his beauty but also the journalist’s photography skills.

The snap, taken when he was a puppy, showed Axel sitting with perfect posture for his dad, flaunting his flawless white and brown coat. His bright green eyes gazed up at his owner as he tilted his head slightly to one side.
“I turned 4 today. I grew into my ears. And I’m a very good boy,” David captioned the post, writing from Axel’s point of view. A second picture showed him taken in 2023, on his birthday, with darker markings and his green eyes now a caramel hue, though he still appears poised as ever.
During a visit on good pals Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ show Live with Kelly and Mark in 2019, he was asked about Axel. He revealed that he was keen to make sure the dog could swim, so David got into his pool and waited for Axel to jump in.

“This is the moment where the dog jumps in from the side and sinks down about 3ft and you have that moment where you’re like, ‘Am I supposed to let this happen?'” David admitted. “And he starts to float back up, his head comes up, and he paddles over to the edge of the pool – it was amazing.”
He went on to playfully share how Axel was a “bird dog, squirrel dog, frog dog… if he finds a frog in the pool, he is good for like, three hours.”

In a post shared in March 2023, David showed his fur baby standing tall on a rock in a lake, looking majestic with the water behind him.
But it’s not all hikes and outdoor adventures for Axel. David has also hinted that the dog has free rein of his $7.7million lakeside home in New York.
In one pic, shared in May 2022 and pinned to the top of David’s Instagram, the duo posed up a storm while sitting on the couch. David looked down at Axel as he gazed at the camera. “We cross our paws together,” David captioned the post.

The most recent update David shared with his thousands of followers was of the pair out on a snowy walk. The ABC star planted a kiss on Axel’s head and penned, “you get one kiss a day from axel.”
It comes as David Muir makes an emotional admission as he admits he’s always been different.
