What really sparked ‘Jolene’? Dolly Parton celebrates 52 years with a throwback video and a story few knew until now. ML
Los Angeles, Oct 16 (IANS) — Dolly Parton is celebrating a major milestone as her legendary song “Jolene” turns 52 years old this year. To mark this special occasion, Dolly delighted fans by posting a throwback video featuring her performing the song, giving a nostalgic glimpse into one of her most enduring hits.
The song, released in 1973, tells the story of a woman pleading with another woman named Jolene, a redhead whose beauty is described as “beyond compare,” not to take her lover away. The heartfelt lyrics convey vulnerability and emotional complexity as Dolly’s character begs Jolene to spare her heartache. It’s a story inspired by real events in Dolly’s life.
According to Dolly, the song was inspired by a redheaded woman who once showed romantic interest in her husband, Carl Dean, while they were newlyweds. Dolly has said that Carl enjoyed visiting the bank because of the attention he received from this woman. Despite the jealousy this caused, Dolly describes the song’s story as “innocent” and “a little bit of truth.”
At the Glastonbury Festival in 2014, Dolly shared, “I wrote ‘Jolene’ years ago when my husband was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be.” She also joked that the situation was a source of humor between her and Carl.
In a 2008 NPR interview, Dolly explained, “He just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kind of a running joke between us. I would say, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank, and I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money!’”
Dolly also revealed that the name “Jolene” came from a chance encounter with a young fan during a concert. She recalled, “One night, I saw this beautiful little girl — about 8 years old — with amazing red hair, beautiful skin, and bright green eyes. She was holding out something for me to autograph. When I asked her name and heard ‘Jolene,’ I knew it was a song waiting to happen.”
“Jolene” has become one of Dolly Parton’s most beloved songs, covered by numerous artists and cherished by fans worldwide. As the song turns 52, Dolly’s throwback video and the story behind the song remind us all of the lasting power of her music and storytelling.
