Born on November 8, 1973, in Syracuse, New York, David grew up in Onondaga Hill. As a child, he was an avid viewer of ABC News’ flagship program, citing longtime anchor Peter Jennings as his primary inspiration. After graduating from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991, he attended Ithaca College, earning a degree in journalism in 1995. During his high school years, he secured an internship at WTVH-TV in Syracuse, which eventually led to a full-time position. In August 2003, he joined ABC News as the anchor of the overnight news program World News Now.
He also took on the role of anchor for ABC News’ early morning newscast World News This Morning and occasionally co-anchored Primetime. By June 2007, he had become the anchor of World News Saturday.
In June 2014, ABC announced that David would take over from Diane Sawyer as the anchor and managing editor of ABC World News. His debut came on September 1 of that year.
He has reported on major stories, including the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, and the recent devastating floods in Texas.
While he’s a consistent on screen presence, little is known about David’s personal life, as he tends to keep his private matters away from public scrutiny. Despite rumors, he has never confirmed being in a relationship and has never been married. Many speculate that his demanding career, which often takes him overseas and requires long hours, may play a part in his decision to stay single.
In 2015, journalist Kate Dries penned a satirical piece where she referred to David as “my boyfriend. ” It remains unclear whether this was purely comedic or hinted at something more, as it has never been confirmed.
At one point, there were also rumors that David might be dating talk show host Kelly Ripa, but they are actually just good friends, with Ripa being married to Mark Consuelos.
While the TV personality has remained quiet on his love life, David has openly discussed how his parents played a pivotal role in shaping his career. He attributes his family’s support for fueling his early interest in journalism, stating, “I’m grateful to my parents for driving me to that TV station when I was a kid.”
In a 2018 interview with Syracuse.com, the newsman acknowledged his Central New York upbringing as a key factor in his career path. He said, “I’m still driven by those voices every single night in putting together this national broadcast. I think the sensibilities of having grown up in Upstate New York and the concerns, the fears, the hopes of the people there are reflected all over the country. And that still drives me to this day.”
He also shared his close bond with his elder sister Rebecca, frequently posting snapshots of his trips to her farm in Borodino, New York. In 2021, he proudly announced his status as a “proud uncle” following his niece, Finan Malcolm’s graduation from Cornell University. David also has two younger step-siblings from his father’s second marriage.
