Janet Devlin opens up about her ‘Not My First Emotional Rodeo’ album—and the surprising influence of Dolly Parton and Chris Stapleton.ML

Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin (“The X Factor” alumna) chatted about her latest studio offering “Not My First Emotional Rodeo.”
Song selection process
On the song selection approach for the new album, Devlin remarked, “Well, I recorded 24 tracks for ‘Emotional Rodeo’ and I only put 14 on it.”
“When I was picking the album tracks I knew I’d end up doing a deluxe because it was so difficult. I ended up having to cut quite a few of my favorite tracks from it,” she noted.

“So, this is them getting their airtime,” she exclaimed.
Favorite song on the album
She listed “Plastic Pistol” as her favorite song on the album.

“I love a bit of dark western, so it was great getting to put my own spin on it,” Devlin said. “It’s also a fan favorite as well because I played it at shows for a year too. People have even brought water pistols to shows as well which is hilarious to me!”
From her own personal musical catalog, Devlin claimed “Honest Men” as her favorite song. “I love ‘Honest Men’,” she exclaimed.
Future plans
On her future plans, she shared, “Well, I’m currently recording all of my new album vocals for the 22 songs I recorded out in Nashville earlier in the year. So, that’ll be coming out!”
“Hopefully, a lot more shows and festivals on the horizon as well. Plus, more writing as always,” she added.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, Devlin said with a sweet laugh, “I’ve never known being an artist in a non-digital age so it’s hard to say.”
“There’s obviously a lot of pros and cons but there always has been and always will be. In a way, it’s a very freeing time to be an artist. Music creation has never been more accessible, nor has music promotion,” she said.
Devlin continued, “As we’ve seen, anyone can go viral online – so that levels the playing field for indie artists. The biggest downside would be that less and less people are purchasing albums and opting for streaming instead.”
“That is difficult if you’re indie and not getting into those big playlists with three or four million listeners,” she noted.
Advice for young and aspiring artists
For young and emerging artists, Devlin said, “Use the tools you have to your advantage! Social media is your new best friend.”
“Post as much as you can because you never know it might be… Video No. 5 that goes viral, or Video No. 500,” she noted.
Dream duet choices in music
Devlin listed Dolly Parton and Chris Stapleton as her dream duet choices in music. “If it was a band, I would love to duet with Muscadine Bloodline,” she said.
Message for her fans about the new music
For her fans and supporters, she concluded about her new album, “I hope that they enjoy it!”
