Toronto Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Receives Touching Tributes and Key to the County From Home .MH

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement was back home in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon as part of ‘Small Business Saturday.’

He signed some autographs, partnering with the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Adam J. Bello, a county executive of Monroe County, N.Y., also welcomed Clement back and presented him with a ‘Key to the County.’ That plaque reads as follows:

“In honor of your historic record with 30 hits during the 2025 MLB postseason. You showcased exceptional talent and determination with a thrilling World Series performance.

A standout student at Brighton High School, named D&C High School Baseball Player of the Decade, and a key contributor to the 2015 College World Series Championship with the University of Virginia, you have brought pride to our community at every level of your career.

Known as a beacon of positivity in the Toronto Blue Jays’ clubhouse, you carry the spirit of your hometown onto the field, inspiring teammates and fans alike.”

And Clement also got some heartfelt comments from those in his hometown, who reportedly told him that watching him and the Jays play in October “made their family’s October.”

Clement said that bringing people together is what sports is all about, and he referenced his own experience growing up in Rochester. You can see those comments from reporter Rachel Libert on social media.

About Clement’s season

Now 29-years-old, Clement had a modest regular season, hitting .277 with a .313 on-base percentage. He carried only a 95 OPS+, suggesting he was a below-average offensive player with nine home runs and 50 RBIs.

However, he remained a defensive standout and was named a finalist for the American League Gold Glove award at third base for the second straight year.

About Clement’s postseason

Clement turned in the historic postseason referenced in the plaque, hitting .411 with a homer and nine RBIs. He had 30 hits in the postseason, the most ever in a single playoffs.

Moving forward

As of now, Clement is penciled in as the Jays’ starter at third base again, but the situation remains fluid. If Toronto signs a marquee outfielder, they would want to put Addison Barger at third.

If Toronto brings back Bo Bichette as well, then one less infield option is open. At that point, would Toronto not sign one of the outfielders? Or, would they sign both positions and relegate Clement to the bench? It all remains to be seen.
