The 49ers just made their call — Mac Jones gets the start while Brock Purdy’s comeback still hangs in the balance.QQ

Brock Purdy’s stubborn toe injury hasn’t fully healed, but the San Francisco 49ers quarterback could play Sunday against the New York Giants despite the risk of aggravating it for a second time this season.

Purdy was listed as questionable and head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy “had a chance” to be available to serve as Mac Jones’ backup. After missing two games, Purdy started in a loss to the Jaguars in Week 4 in which he aggravated his injury, forcing him to be inactive for the past four games.

Shanahan acknowledged Purdy hasn’t fully recovered and was asked about the possibility of their franchise QB suffering another setback Sunday if Jones is sidelined and Purdy is forced into action. Jones is dealing with two separate knee injuries, but he wasn’t listed on the final injury report.

“Yes, I think you just answered your own question,” Shanahan said when asked if there was a risk of Purdy aggravating the injury. “Obviously, there’s a risk with everything. Can he hurt it again? Yes.”

Purdy has been limited in practice the past three weeks, but he took a few starter reps this past week, with Jones taking the majority. Shanahan said Purdy took all the starter snaps before he returned from his injury in September against the Jaguars.

“The first time, we let him get all those starter reps and it was great,” Shanahan said. “Then there was a chance he could re-hurt it in the game, he did, and he has been out for the last month. He got more reps this week, but we weren’t going to commit to all of (them) like we did last time. So I think it’s easing him back more than last time.”

Purdy was injured in a season-opening win at Seattle on Sept. 7. Before the 49ers’ win against the Falcons on Oct. 19, he told NBC’s Melissa Stark that his injury was “so annoying” and he’d never dealt with an ailment that lingers so long. He has progressed to the point where he could play Sunday, even if he hasn’t completely recovered.

“Just speaking for him, I know he is frustrated,” Shanahan said. “Anytime you’ve got stuff that you haven’t had before that lingers – Brock is more frustrated than anyone that he can’t be out there. He has talked to a lot of people who have had this and I think a lot of people have warned him that this is the case. So he understands it and it’s not just totally shocking him. But I think anytime you have something that doesn’t go away, it’s frustrating.”

Other injuries: Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) won’t play against the Giants, missing his fifth straight game with what Shanahan initially described as a “minor” PCL injury. Pearsall has yet to practice since he was hurt.

The 49ers have listed five other players as questionable: guard Ben Bartch (ankle), defensive end Sam Okuayinonu (ankle), defensive tackle Jordan Elliott (ankle), linebacker Dee Winters (knee) and offensive tackle Spencer Burford (knee). Center Jake Brendel (hamstring) and defensive ends Bryce Huff (hamstring) and Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring) were ruled out.

The Giants will play without their two starting outside cornerbacks, Paulson Adebo (knee) and Cordale Flott (concussion).
