DOLLY PARTON ON HER 58-YEAR MARRIAGE TO CARL DEAN: “HE LOVES ME THE WAY I AM” — A LOVE STORY AS ENDURING AS HER SONGS
Nashville, Tennessee — For more than five decades, Dolly Parton has written some of the world’s greatest love songs — but her own real-life love story with her husband Carl Dean might be the most timeless of them all. In a new interview with PEOPLE, the 79-year-old country legend opened up about the secret to their remarkable 58-year marriage, saying simply: “He loves me the way I am.”
The pair met in 1964 outside a Nashville laundromat — Dolly was just 18, fresh off the bus from the Smoky Mountains, and Carl was 21, a quiet, hard-working local. From that moment, the two became inseparable. They married in 1966, in a small, private ceremony in Georgia, and have kept their relationship largely out of the spotlight ever since.
“Carl’s never been one for attention,” Dolly shared with a smile. “He’s always preferred being behind the scenes, just letting me shine. I think that’s part of why it’s worked so well. He doesn’t want to be in the limelight — and I’ve got enough sparkle for both of us!”
Despite their contrasting personalities — Dolly, vibrant and outgoing; Carl, private and reserved — the couple’s bond has remained unbreakable. Over the years, Dolly has often described him as her anchor, the calm presence that keeps her grounded amid a whirlwind career.
“He’s the one person who knows me completely,” she said. “Not Dolly the performer — just Dolly, the person. And that’s who he loves.”

Their long marriage hasn’t been without its challenges. Life on the road, fame, and constant public attention could have easily tested their union, but Dolly says humor and respect have always kept them close. “We laugh all the time,” she told PEOPLE. “Carl’s got a crazy sense of humor. He makes me laugh every single day. And I think laughter is one of the best things you can share.”
The couple quietly renewed their vows in 2016 to celebrate their 50th anniversary, with Dolly calling it “one of the sweetest days of my life.” She wore a custom wedding gown for the occasion, saying she wanted to give her husband “something special after all these years.”
Though Carl rarely makes public appearances — and has never joined her on the red carpet — Dolly insists that his love has been her constant source of strength. “I couldn’t have done what I’ve done without him,” she admitted. “He believed in me before anyone else did. He still does.”
In an industry where relationships often fade under fame’s bright lights, Dolly and Carl’s marriage has become a beacon of devotion and quiet endurance. As Dolly put it, “We’re completely different people, but we just fit. I always say, I’m the butterfly and he’s the rock — and somehow, that works.”
Their story reminds the world that true love doesn’t need grand gestures or headlines. It just needs patience, laughter, and the simple beauty of being accepted — flaws and all.
“He loves me the way I am,” Dolly said softly. “And after all these years, I still love him for exactly who he is.”
