The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with several costly injuries over the course of the 2025 NFL season, which would have devastated most teams and their chances of competing for a playoff spot, as it is tough to bounce back after losing star players to injury one after another.

Despite seeing defensive stars like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner go down with severe injuries, along with star quarterback Brock Purdy missing the majority of the season, the 49ers have been able to stay afloat in the NFC, sporting an impressive record of 9-4 heading into their much-needed bye week.

With four regular-season games left to be played, the 49ers are hoping for a strong finish to clinch a playoff spot in the NFC.

Heading into the team’s bye week, San Francisco seems to have received some promising news about Warner, who many believed would be out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken and dislocated ankle.

Interestingly enough, 49ers general manager John Lynch provided a telling update on Warner, which has left the door open for Warner to return this season.

“Well, medically, no,” Lynch said of Warner. “I mean, the docs say it’s probably on the wrong side of the range that they would suggest. But even the docs with Fred say, ‘You know what, let him rehab as if he’s coming back for something and we’ll see where he’s at’. I think it’s outside the realm, and I promise you, it’s our duty, with a player like Fred, not to ever put himself in harm’s way in terms of not being ready and so we’ll follow the orders of the doctors. They’ll control this, but Fred is going to push the limits, and he is doing everything possible. He lives in a hyperbaric chamber for two, three hours a day. He’s here all the time. He’s unbelievable, this guy. It’s what made him who he is.”

Obviously, the 49ers would get a huge boost on the defensive side of the football if Warner can return at some point, but it does seem like a stretch, considering the severity of his injury.

49ers Legend Steve Young Chimes in on Brandon Aiyuk

Although there seems to be a chance that Warner gets back on the field during the 2025 campaign, the same doesn’t seem to be the case with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Along with potentially not returning this season, Aiyuk might’ve played his last game in a 49ers uniform, with 49ers legend Steve Young recently chiming in on the subject.

“It feels like it’s up to Brandon,” Young said on KNBR. “It feels like he’s decided that it’s broken and has moved on. But I think football has an emotional game, and people, relationships mend, and people change their ways. And they see a new potential where they saw no potential before. I might be wrong that it’s Brandon’s choice.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this situation pans out, but there’s a good chance that Aiyuk might be suiting up for another team next season.
