📰 NEWS FLASH: The Blue Jays land righty Spencer Miles from San Francisco in the Rule 5 Draft, sparking buzz about his untapped talent ⚡.DD

The Toronto Blue Jays have taken a calculated swing in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft by selecting right-handed pitcher Spencer Miles from the San Francisco Giants.

It’s the kind of move that tells you a team is willing to gamble a bit on upside, even if the player’s medical file looks like a novella.

Miles, 25 years old and listed at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, has dealt with more surgical interventions than most pitchers would prefer in an entire career.

Originally drafted by the Giants in the fourth round in 2022, he lost his entire 2023 season after undergoing back surgery.

He managed to pitch briefly in 2024 but appeared in only five games before a right flexor strain led to Tommy John surgery, sidelining him yet again.

Despite all that, Miles returned to action in 2025 and showed encouraging flashes in the Arizona Fall League, suiting up for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Over five appearances, he logged 8 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts, showcasing a fastball that reached 98.4 mph.

The velocity bump and strikeout results are precisely the kind of signs front offices look for when identifying breakout candidates buried under injury history.

By selecting him in the major-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft, the Blue Jays are required to keep Miles on their 26-man roster for the entire upcoming season.

If they want to remove him from that roster at any point, he must first be placed on outright waivers, which opens the door for another team to claim him.

This restriction naturally raises the stakes, since Toronto can’t simply stash him in the minors for development unless he clears waivers.

For the Jays, the upside is obvious: if Miles’ stuff holds up and he continues trending upward health-wise, they might walk away with a cost-controlled reliever who can bring upper-90s velocity out of the bullpen.

On the other hand, if injuries or inconsistency strike again, the team risks losing the roster spot or giving him back to the Giants.

Rule 5 picks are always a blend of optimism and pragmatism, and Miles fits that mold perfectly.
