⚡ LATEST UPDATE: Analysts say the Astros’ premier prospect could headline a trade package capable of landing a game-changing star ⚡.DD

The Houston Astros are coming off a disappointing 2025 season. For the first time in eight seasons, they were not a part of the postseason and had to watch the playoffs from the comfort of their homes.
Injuries played a big role in the team’s fumbled season. However, they are now at risk of losing their ace pitcher, Framber Valdez, who is a free agent. He is not just any free agent, though. He is arguably the best pitcher on the open market and will garner a ton of attention.
You can almost guarantee they will be searching for a frontline starter during the winter. They could turn their attention to the open market, or, with the MLB Winter Meetings right around the corner, could pull off a trade.
Astros’ top prospect could be a great centerpiece for a potential trade
The Astros have a pretty stacked infield, and they will have to figure out how to get all of these players ample playing time. This leaves Brice Matthews, the club’s top prospect, without a clear path to playing time in the big leagues.
Without a clear path, Houston could look at trading him. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter believes he is a player to watch closely over the next few weeks.
“The Astros have to figure out how all the pieces fit together this spring with Carlos Correa, Isaac Paredes, and Jose Altuve all in the mix for playing time at second base and third base, while Jeremy Pena is locked in at shortstop.”

There is no denying that multiple teams are looking to secure some depth in the infield during the offseason. Matthews is near MLB-ready and could entice a good amount of attention, allowing the Astros to acquire someone who can help them win games in 2026.
