The Cubs, who led the NL with 84 Defensive Runs Saved, were named the top defensive team in the league for the second time, while also winning the inaugural Fielding Bible Team award.

CHICAGO — In a stunning display of defensive excellence, the Chicago Cubs have earned the 2025 Rawlings Team Gold Glove Award, securing their place as the top defensive team in the National League. This is the second time the team has won the award since its inception in 2020.

The announcement, made Friday evening, highlights a remarkable achievement for the Cubs, whose defensive strength was a major factor in their 92-win season and their impressive run to Game 5 of the NLDS.

Chicago’s defense was dominant by every measure.

  • 84 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS): Led the National League by 17 DRS over the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers. It was second in all of MLB, trailing only the Texas Rangers (89 DRS).
  • 36 Outs Above Average (OAA): Led all of Major League Baseball.
  • 30 Runs Prevented: Led all of Major League Baseball.
  • 40 Fielding Run Value: Led MLB.

Individual and Team Honors

While the team’s overall defense has been a defining factor, individual players also earned recognition. Three Cubs players received individual Gold Glove honors, more than any other team in the National League:

  • Ian Happ (LF): Won his fourth consecutive Gold Glove.
  • Nico Hoerner (2B): Earned his second career Gold Glove.
  • Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF): Won his first Gold Glove in a phenomenal rookie season.

Hoerner’s stats were particularly impressive, leading all MLB second basemen with 17 DRS, 12.3 Defensive Runs Above Average, and 14 Outs Above Average. Crow-Armstrong, meanwhile, ranked second among center fielders in both DRS and OAA.

Beyond the three winners, the Cubs had three other finalists: third baseman Matt Shaw, pitcher Matthew Boyd, and catcher Carson Kelly. The Cubs were the only team to register positive runs saved at eight of nine defensive positions.

This defensive dominance also earned the Cubs the inaugural 2025 Fielding Bible Team of the Year award, further cementing their reputation as one of the most well-rounded teams in the league.

As Ian Happ reflected on the team’s achievement, he expressed pride in the collective effort that led to this victory.

“This win isn’t just for me, it’s for the entire team. We’ve worked hard every day to maintain excellence on defense. Being recognized as the top defensive team in the National League is an incredible achievement, and I truly believe we can be even better. We’ll keep fighting and prove that our defense isn’t just a key to our success, but our strength to go even further.”

The Cubs’ defense will continue to be a cornerstone of their success, and with this award, they’ve set the standard for excellence in the National League.
