Key Points
- Taylor Swift’s handwritten letter to Liam Payne resurfaced and is now up for auction.

- Fans reacted emotionally online; Payne died in 2024 after a tragic fall in Buenos Aires.
A handwritten letter Taylor Swift once sent to the late Liam Payne just surfaced, and the internet is fully in its feelings.
On Wednesday, November 12, U.K.-based Omega Auctions took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the never-before-seen note, announcing that it’s officially heading to auction. “Expecting serious interest in this. An original handwritten note from #TaylorSwift to Liam Payne, December 2017. Offered in our ‘Showcase’ sale of music memorabilia, 2nd December,” the auction house wrote alongside photos of the stationery.

The listing on Omega’s website includes the full text and confirms the note appears on Swift’s personalized card stock dated December 1, 2017. “Liam, Long time no see! I’m so excited for you, you’re crushing it out there. I’m obsessed with Bedroom Floor. It’s so cool to see you from afar, I’m always cheering you on. Good luck tonight! Taylor,” she wrote in her signature looping handwriting.
Tucked inside an envelope addressed simply to “Liam,” the card was sealed with her TS wax stamp and marked with a Nashville, Tennessee return. Omega explains that while the note was written earlier, it was handed to Payne the night of Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball, where both artists performed in December 2017. According to the listing, he later gifted it to a close associate, who held onto it until now. The estimated sale price sits between £5,000 and £10,000.
It didn’t take long for the screenshots to make the rounds — the internet reacted in seconds.
“Well this just broke my heart into a million pieces,” one person wrote.
“This is so sweet. I am still not used to seeing ‘Late’ when talking about Liam,” another admitted.
“And now I will go cry myself to sleep thank u,” chimed in a third.
“Oh don’t do this to me😭,” someone else said.
“I had no idea they interacted in any way. Proof that we don’t actually know what’s happening behind the curtain and the who’s who of who’s that,” added another.
For longtime fans, the note doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. While chatting with On Demand Entertainment in 2017, Payne mentioned that Swift had surprised him backstage with “a lovely little hamper of her new Reputation gear… and a little note.” He added, “She’s got very good handwriting, if she did write it.”
So the existence of a letter has been known for years — but nobody had seen the actual message until now. Seeing the full text for the first time reveals a warmer, more personal tone than fans ever realized. Swift’s support landed at a pivotal moment in his early solo run, right as he was releasing new music and figuring out life after One Direction’s hiatus.
On October 16, 2024, Payne died after falling from a balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel. According to AP News, the autopsy confirmed the fall caused multiple traumatic injuries and severe internal bleeding. Investigators say substances were found in his system and that he may not have been fully conscious when the fall happened — authorities ruled out foul play.
