Padres Draw the Line: Fernando Tatis Jr. Off-Limits Even Amid Ownership Uncertainty.NL

The San Diego Padres were one of the eight teams in Major League Baseball to secure 90-plus regular-season victories this season, but they failed to make it past the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the playoffs.

The Padres have displayed sustained success recently, making it to the playoffs in four of the last six seasons. Despite this, the owners of the team, the Seidler family, issued a statement that they will be evaluating their future with the franchise and may potentially sell the team.
“The family has decided to begin a process of evaluating our future with the Padres, including a potential sale of the franchise,” chairman John Seidler said, as transcribed by MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. “We will undertake this process with integrity and professionalism in a way that honors Peter’s legacy and love for the Padres and lays the foundation for the franchise’s long-term success. We remain fully committed to this team, its fans, and the San Diego community.”
The Seidler family has been part of the Padres’ ownership group since 2012, with Peter Seidler serving as chairman and controlling owner from 2020 to 2023 before his death two years ago. During that time, the Padres made significant investments, signing Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts to massive contracts that will keep all three players with the team through the 2034 season.

Despite a potential ownership change, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that the Padres will not be trading superstar outfielder Tatis this offseason.
“The San Diego Padres, who announced Thursday they are up for sale, won’t trade All-Star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. now, but go ahead and check back with their new ownership a year from now.” Nightengale wrote on Thursday.

Tatis is one of the biggest stars in the league. The 26-year-old is already a three-time All-Star and is on a 14-year, $340 million contract, according to Spotrac. San Diego has what it takes to win now and is ready to compete for a World Series. Once a potential sale takes place, it will be interesting to see if new owners would want to trade away one of the team’s largest contracts in Tatis, but for now, he is here to stay.
