The purpose of Michelle Obama’s appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Tuesday was to promote her new book, “The Look,” which focuses on her personal style and fashion choices as first lady.

Inevitably, though, as someone who spent eight years in the White House, she was asked about President Donald Trump’s demolition of the East Wing and his plan to replace it with a gaudy, $250 million ballroom.

“We never viewed it as our house. We were there for a time. We had a job to do. We always felt it was the people’s house,” Obama told Colbert. “And, yes, every administration has a right and a duty to maintain the house – make investments and improvements – and there are plenty of things that need fixing there.
