Mac Jones’ Reaction to His Benching Revealed by Kyle Shanahan! 1 Mac Jones (Image via IMAGO)
From the beginning, Mac Jones knew his role with the San Francisco 49ers was to hold down the fort while Brock Purdy recovered from injury. Jones stepped up when Kyle Shanahan needed him the most. For themost part, he performed far better than the Niners fans envisioned.
Despite the recent defeat against the Los Angeles Rams, Jones won five games from eight starts (5-3). He looked irreplaceable, but let’s not forget that he was only filling in for Purdy. The fourth-year quarterback returned to full practice, and Shanahan felt compelled to elevate him as the starter over Jones.
Shanahan still had to break the news to Jones. And to his surprise, the Alabama graduate did not object to the demotion.
Honestly, it was awesome. I mean, I didn’t even have to communicate with him. I think he understood the situation that he went into. He’s understood it the whole time.
Kyle Shanahan said on the KNBR Radio Show
According to Shanahan, Jones approached preparation for next week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals just like any other, even though he knew in the back of his mind that Purdy was nearly fully recovered.
He had a real good idea that Brock was getting there, was going to be ready this week, so it wasn’t something that I really had to have a big meeting with or anything—but I did before we went out on the practice field. I did call him in just to tell him how much I appreciated how well he played during that time, and to kind of thank him for it.
Purdy is one of the many players the Niners have missed over the course of the first ten weeks of the season. After signing the mega contract, Purdy was all set to take the NFL by storm until he suffered injuries to his left shoulder and toe, with the latter being the greater issue of the two.
Going into that week, I felt good. I really did. I thought I was going to be good to go. I just unfortunately got caught in a bad position with my toe again, and it just re-aggravated it.
Brock Purdy said this week
The doctors extended his rehab to make sure his toe had enough time to fully heal. He is all set to start against the Cardinals.
He’s like, ‘Hey, man, I enjoyed it, and I’m gonna go have fun on the scout team today, and I’ll be ready if I’m ever needed again… Mac’s handled it great since the beginning. He and Brock have been studs in the room together.
Shanahan added
Should the 49ers trade Mac Jones?
Jones signed a two-year deal in the offseason after a short stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. However, he has completely changed the narrative about himself.
NFL teams have noticed his talent, and in the right system, Jones could enjoy a career resurgence similar to Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, and Daniel Jones. However, with Purdy on the roster, that’s unlikely to happen in San Francisco.
So the next best option is to acquire as high a value from Jones through a trade. Plenty of quarterback-needy teams are bound to call general manager John Lynchfor Jones’ services.
For instance, the Cardinals could part ways with Kyler Murray, who is heavily linked with a move to the Saints. The Cardinals will undoubtedly acquire high picks for the Heisman Trophy winner, which they can use to lure Jones to Arizona.
It’s safe to assume that the 49ers are in a great spot. But before thinking about next year, Shanahan and co. have to take care of business in 2025.
