Inside the 49ers’ silence: What they’re not saying about Brock Purdy’s mysterious injury.QQ

As star quarterback Brock Purdy is trying not to miss his fifth straight game, the 49ers leadership is running out of answers to questions about his lingering turf toe injury.
Both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have addressed the Purdy situation in the past 24 hours. To catch folks up: Purdy suffered the initial injury in Week 1, missed two games and then played while apparently fully recovered in Week 4, only to re-aggravate the injury in that game. While Purdy was initially hopeful it wasn’t as bad as the first time, the injured toe has now kept him out for twice as many games — and it could still be more. Purdy reportedly called the injury “so annoying” when speaking with NBC’s Melissa Stark two weeks ago.
Before Purdy was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice, Shanahan held his usual Wednesday press conference. Right away, Shanahan gruffly answered a question about whether Purdy would get first-team reps by saying simply Purdy would “get reps” without specifying with which team.
Right before the end of the availability, a reporter asked what it would take for Shanahan to be confident in Purdy’s ability to play on Sunday.
“If he gets out there, and he’s hobbling around and stuff, he won’t be out there. So he’s got to go out there and go through the practices and stuff and really let us know how good he feels because it’s hard to know what’s going on with the toe,” Shanahan told reporters. “They’re really iffy things. Last time, we felt like he was feeling pretty good, looked pretty good in practice, and then in the game, one hit, and it set him back five or six weeks, whatever this has been … four weeks.
“It’s kind of a sensitive situation, and hopefully getting some reps in practice and stuff will give him that confidence that it’s better than it was last time.”
A different reporter then asked Shanahan if Purdy will give his coach an answer by the end of practices this week. Shanahan retorted: “I mean, I didn’t give him a deadline. It’s not as black and white as you guys want it to be.” That ended the presser.
Lynch made his weekly appearance on KNBR-AM/FM’s “Murph and Markus” morning show on Thursday. When co-host Brian Murphy asked Lynch who would start, Lynch didn’t have an answer yet about his $265 million man.
“We’ll see. Mac’s done such a great job and continues to do so. Brock, as I mentioned, continues to progress. Kyle spoke of it yesterday,” Lynch said. “A lot of it, at this point, is going to be about trusting Brock and where he’s at. He continues to feel better and ramp up what he’s doing out on the field. We’ll see by the end of this week and make a good decision.”
After that, co-host Markus Boucher asked if the 49ers’ upcoming game at the New York Giants and their reviled turf field at MetLife Stadium was a factor in Purdy’s decision. Lynch said it was not.
At this point, the Niners brass really isn’t saying anything new. At least we’ll find out for certain if Purdy is back on Sunday, with the game against the Giants set to kickoff at 10 a.m. on Fox.
