From the Chiefs’ sidelines to the Giants’ spotlight — how one coach’s patience just paid off in the biggest way.QQ

The Kansas City Chiefs can thank Mike Kafka for having a helping hand in Patrick Mahomes’ development.

The Kansas City Chiefs have, for years now, been one of the franchises that have consistently put some of their staff members in great positions in their careers. For example, the Tennessee Titans general manager, Mike Borgonzi, was the assistant general manager for years under GM Brett Veach in Kansas City.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has had his chances at head coaching with the Chicago Bears. That side of things didn’t work out how everyone would have hoped, but he’s back with the team now, and in talks for another opportunity in the head coaching world. One guy who everyone always knew would one day be a good head coach is Mike Kafka, and now he’s getting his opportunity.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Kafka, the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator, is now the interim head coach there after the firing of head coach Brian Daboll on Monday Morning.
Kafka has a good case for being the Giants’ next head coach
I think it’s important to note that the Giants have always put the best roster around Daboll and Kafka the last few years. They have some really good, young pieces on their team. However, not a good enough squad to compete for the postseason. The Giants are going to be searching for a new head coach now, and Kafka, the man right in front of them, makes a great case for being the next man up.
Sure, the offensive numbers haven’t exactly been there, but Kafka hasn’t had full control, and maybe even hardly any control, of the offense. It’s also important to remember that they have a rookie quarterback in Jaxson Dart, who looks extremely promising.
Who was the one to help develop Patrick Mahomes into what he is today? Kafka has a pretty big hand in that. He could take some of the things he learned in that experience and apply them further to his new situation with Dart. Developing Dart the rest of the season and putting some extremely good things on film there could be what saves Kafka the job.
However, we all know how this business works. The Giants will likely find someone else to do the job because more often than not, the interim doesn’t get the full-time job.
Another wrinkle to add to this all — if Kafka doesn’t get the job, the guy they hire could let Kafka go. What happens when former Chiefs staff members get let go? They usually end up back with the Chiefs somehow in some type of role.
