Dolly Parton says she feels most connected to her spiritual side during the quiet hours when much of the world is asleep.
In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, Parton revealed that she regularly wakes at 3 a.m. or earlier to connect with her spiritual side. She admits that it’s during these quiet moments that she confronts the experiences and emotions that mean the most to her.
“Sometimes it’s earlier than that,” the country superstar revealed. “That’s when I do all my spiritual work, my prayers and my dreaming, my thinking, when all the energies of the world have kind of died down.”
“The older you get, the earlier you wake up, I’ve noticed that too. I don’t want to miss nothing either. So I don’t require a lot of sleep, I’m just one of those people that don’t.”
She concluded, “It seems to work for a long time, and I don’t see that changing. I’m an early bird.”
Dolly Parton ‘lives’ her spirituality

In an interview with CBS Evening News, Dolly Parton admitted she “lives” her spirituality every day. “That’s how you practice it,” she explained.
“A lot of people overthink spirituality,” the country superstar continued. “Therefore they think it has to be some big ritual.”
“The kingdom of heaven is right inside of you. You can draw from that wisdom whether you call it God, a higher wisdom, or a higher knowing.”
She concluded, “There’s something bigger than you. I think you just need to claim it.”
“And you can apply that to anything you do. I don’t think you have to be a saint, or you can’t have fun. It’s all about the intent of your heart.”
In 2025, Dolly Parton released the book, Star of the Show: My Life on Stage, and a musical based on her life, Dolly: A True Original Musical, is slated to premiere in 2026.
