Democrats’ blue wave faces ridicule as ‘The View’ cohosts claim they’ve sunk even further than politics allows.NH

The View is surfing a blue wave, as the cohosts praised Democratic victories around the country the morning after Election Day.

Following key party wins in the New York City mayoral race (which led to Zohran Mamdani’s historic triumph over Andrew Cuomo) and gubernatorial contests in New Jersey and Virginia, comedian Joy Behar kicked off the group’s Hot Topics summary with a notable takeaway: “What’s his name, Trump, is going to have to really learn how to pronounce Mamdani’s name now, that’s going to be really rough on him!”

The audience laughed as she segued into a sobering realization that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene — the conservative Georgia politician the cohosts have long criticized for her outbursts and endorsement of conspiracy theories — is “basically turning on the Republicans in several areas,” Behar said. She then praised Rep. Greene for her Tuesday morning appearance on the talk show, calling the Republican “smarter than we thought” initially.

Sara Haines praised New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial champions Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger as “common sense, pragmatic, service-level people” who proved that Americans are willing to elect women “when it’s the right woman,” Haines observed.

“I agree that these were exceptional candidates. I also think what it taught us is the Democratic Party is a big-tent party. It’s an inclusive party,” panelist Sunny Hostin said, praising Mamdani’s election as the first Muslim mayor of New York City. “People want change. He may not be the face of the Democratic party, but there are many faces; women, centrists, independents, muslims, immigrants, that is a huge takeaway.”

She also noted that the passing of Proposition 50 in California — a redistricting measure that gives Democrats the opportunity to perhaps win up to five more congressional seats — signaled “the roadmap for how Democrats become the opposition party” against Republicans.

“You meet energy with energy. When they go low, you go lower. I’m sorry, but that is where we are right now,” stressed Hostin. “We need that opposition, and I think we saw that last night.”

Republican commentator Ana Navarro called Tuesday’s results a “resounding rejection of Donald Trump‘s second term,” while lambasting him for inserting “himself into this race” in New York City by endorsing Cuomo.

“That was the kiss of death for Andrew Cuomo,” Behar said, while Navarro later said that she felt Tuesday’s numbers pointed to Americans taking “outrage to the ballot boxes” in a move against Trump and his policies.

“We must remind everybody who won, what their job is supposed to be and why you voted or them. And when it’s not happening, it is our right as New Yorkers, as Americans, to say, ‘What is happening? I gave you my vote!'” moderator Whoopi Goldberg summarized. “That’s one of the things Marjorie Taylor Greene understood, is that your constituents are your boss. Your party is not your boss, your constituents are your boss when the constituents say, ‘Get up, get the job done, we mean what we say, or don’t come back.'”

The EGOT-winning actress advised viewers that results like this have “always been in our hands” as long as voting is free and fair.

“No one can say, ‘I’m the president so I’m going to run for 400 years. We have the right to say, ‘Um, excuse me, you’re not allowed to do that!'” Goldberg said, to which Navarro responded by introducing another scenario to counter the rise of a potential third-term Trump presidency — as he’s teased in the recent past.Whoopi Goldberg on ‘The View’.

“I saw Obama on the trail in Virginia, and I thought to myself, Okay, Donald Trump, you want to run for a third time? We’ve got a candidate,” Navarro said. “If he can run for a third term, so can Obama.”

Tuesday’s polling also made headlines in Hollywood, after Debra Messing was criticized for sharing a meme that referred to Mamdani — son of film director Mira Nair — as a “jihadist” candidate, employing a term often used to describe people who violently defend Islamic ideals. (Representatives for Messing did not reply to EW’s requests for comment.)

The View airs weekdays on ABC.
