Dak Prescott knows his words have the power to shape the Cowboys locker room, and with the team sitting at 3-4 with a struggling defense, he didn’t turn down the idea that change is necessary.
Prescott neither promised nor begged for trades. Instead, he recognized the clear reality that, with the NFL trade deadline nearing, the roster might change in a matter of days.
“It definitely can help a team, (not) being naïve and understanding where we are,” Prescott said Thursday to The Athletic. “To say one position is where we need to go, or that, I’m not sure.”
“Leave it to the guys who are in those talks and I’m sure making those decisions and working hard right now as we near the deadline to figure out something.” Although the team continues to face challenges on the field, they remain a major draw in sports, especially after Paige Bueckers wowed the stadium with a perfect spiral.
Since Dallas traded Micah Parsons to Green Bay in a move that still doesn’t sound real when fans say it out loud, the defense has given up 31.3 points and 404.6 yards per game, ranking 31st in both categories. The unit looks lost, and it’s forcing Prescott to carry everything on his back.
Prescott has 2,069 passing yards (third in the league), 16 touchdowns (tied for third), 5 interceptions (tied for 56th), and a 79.5 QBR that keeps him in the MVP conversation despite the record.
Edge rushers, defensive linemen, any form of help that can stop the bleeding, and all of it is reportedly under consideration.

“But I will go back to what I said after the last game. I just encourage the guys in the locker room to do whatever they can in this time to shut that talk up. That’s just all of us looking in the mirror and trying to say where can I be better and how can I take advantage of this opportunity.”
They had their defense get shredded again in Week 8, and owner Jerry Jones, who built his empire by investing in oil and gas, didn’t help the optics this week when he admitted where his mind has been lately.
“There’s $100 billion present value with gas out there,” Jones told The Wall Street Journal.
“That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.” Every decision since the Parsons trade has felt like patchwork.

Dallas signed Jadeveon Clowney to the active roster after that deal, and since then got arrested. The transactions have piled up like a team trying to hold itself together. They placed Trevon Diggs on injured reserve, designating DeMarvion Overshown and Cooper Beebe to return, rotating receivers between the practice squad and active roster, and juggling linemen almost weekly.
The Cowboys host the Arizona Cardinals on Monday at AT&T Stadium for Week 9, one day before the November 4 trade deadline.
