Andy Reid shrugs off a slow start from his star player, proving the Chiefs’ confidence isn’t shaken by early struggles.QQ

It’s not time to panic yet.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense has been solid overall so far this season, but hasn’t been quite as dominant as we’ve seen over the last few years.
The unit has been middle-of-the-pack against the run, ranking 12th in the NFL while surrendering nearly 105 rushing yards per game. It has lacked in sacks compared to previous years, currently ranking 20th with 20. The drop off in that department started in 2024 as the Chiefs ranked 19th in sacks after finishing second in both 2022 and 2023.

A lot of that can be attributed to lack of help for Chris Jones. One of the best defensive linemen of the past decade, Jones has faced a tremendous amount of double-teams over the past two seasons as offenses haven’t respected other Chiefs defenders. It seems as though that has taken a toll on Jones, whose stat line doesn’t look very productive so far in 2025.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid believes Chris Jones will breakout during second half of the season
While speaking to the media on Monday, Reid was asked if Jones needs to be more productive in order for the Chiefs’ defense to be better during the final eight games of the season.
“I think we all need to do better,” Reid said. “I would say that Chris is always striving to do better every day. That’s what’s made him such a good player. He’s the guy that they’re (opposing offenses) going to focus on. If we’re getting a double team, that’s who’s (Jones) getting doubled. He’ll get his as we go forward. It’s just important that he stays consistent and keeps working hard.”
Jones is currently on pace for a career low in tackles, and his lowest sack total since his rookie year in 2016. He has just two of the latter so far, along with only eight quarterback pressures. Jones having no quality help is still part of the equation, but many feel as though he should be more productive even considering the circumstances.
It’s tough to measure defensive line play, especially when you’re the centerpiece of every offense’s gameplan. As we know, Jones has a great attitude and is certainly looking for ways to improve. He has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt, and Kansas City’s defense has a history of playing its best football down the stretch. Jones and the Chiefs will have the opportunity to make a statement on Sunday against a struggling Denver Broncos’ offense.
