In the Kansas City Chiefs’ 23-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Rashee Rice’s standout performance in the fourth quarter and overtime was crucial, especially his key plays that shifted momentum. His ability to create after the catch, gaining extra yards beyond the original play design, played a key role in the victory.
“Rashee Rice hauled in 6 receptions for 136 yards in the seams in the Chiefs’ Week 12 win over the Colts, the 2nd-most of any player in a game this season. Rice also totaled a career-high 103 YAC, gaining 10+ YAC on three separate plays in the 2nd half,” Next Gen Stats wrote about Rice’s game.

Rashee Rice stepped up when the Chiefs needed him most
The game didn’t start particularly well for any of the wide receivers. On that first dive, the Chiefs threw an interception on what looked like an RPO play. On the second drive, the Chiefs drove down the field primarily running the ball, with some dinks and dunks here and there. It was effective and efficient, that is, until they were in the red zone.
But late in the game, Rice and, on one play, Xavier Worthy, came alive. On second and 13 in their own end zone with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Rice caught a pass and went for 47 yards, flipping the field and turning the game around at a crucial moment.
“It’s a guy who stepped up and made plays happen,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters after the overtime win. “He wants to be great… They had a lot of attention on Travis… to have another guy to step up and make plays… You’ve got to have that…”
Rice’s play on second and 13 took the win probability from 28% to 50%. He was a game changer on Sunday, and the Chiefs are going to need that going forward. They can win the remaining games on their schedule, but it won’t be easy. The way they have to think of it is, keep winning, and you’ve got to be in the postseason by the time the season is over.
