Typically the team coming out of the bye week is erasing players names from the injury report, not adding to it. However, the Indianapolis Colts had a surprise entry on the team’s injured list from practice on Thursday with the addition of quarterback Daniel Jones.

Jones was listed as “limited” with a calf injury out of nowhere, after having been healthy for the entirety of the Colts’ very successful season thus far.

The Colts will address the scenario on Friday with the final update from head coach Shane Steichen before the team travels to Kansas City to get ready for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Per NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, the Colts are “being cautious” with the injury.

The Colts are coming into K.C. as a well-rested contender trying to finish well after jumping out of the gate to start the season. The Colts lead the AFC South with an 8-2 overall record and a real chance to claim home-field advantage in the postseason if they can maintain momentum.

Jones’s performance this season has been a big part of Indy’s shocking success in 2025. The former Giants castoff came in as yet another retread at quarterback for a Colts regime on the hot seat. But with Steichen as his head coach, the offense has taken off with Jones at the helm. Jones is completing 70 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions—four of which have come in his last two games.

The turnaround in the standings is remarkable for Jones, who had a 24-44-1 record after six years with the New York Giants. Jones is only one win away from a career mark, when he led the Giants to a 9-6-1 record in 2022.

Riley Leonard is the only other quarterback on the Colts roster, a sixth-round rookie who started at Notre Dame last year after three seasons at Duke. Brett Rypien is on the team’s practice squad as another option and more security.

It’s hard to imagine Jones isn’t under center on Sunday for the Colts, but the situation is going to be something for both sides to watch. The good news for Jones is that he’s got a very good offensive line working to protect him, with dependable weapons like running back Jonathan Taylor and tight end Tyler Warren to do the heavy lifting.
