Toronto Loses Key 28-Year-Old Arm to Free Agency .MH

The Toronto Blue Jays lost a depth piece for the organization on Monday.

Toronto outrighted veteran relief pitcher Nick Sandlin off the team’s 40-man roster on Saturday, as shared on X by Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
“The Blue Jays outrighted Nick Sandlin off their 40-man roster (Saturday) in what amounts to an early non-tender,” Nicholson-Smith wrote. “The move opens up a 40-man spot (Jays now at 37) & clears a projected $2 million (via MLB Trade Rumors) from the Jays’ arb class. Sandlin likely to become a free agent.”
Nicholson-Smith wasn’t wrong about Sandlin likely to become a free agent. The Blue Jays officially announced on Monday that he cleared waivers, but opted to enter free agency.
“Roster Move: RHP Nick Sandlin has cleared waivers and elected free agency,” the Blue Jays announced on X.

Sandlin pitched for the Blue Jays in 2025 and made 19 appearances at the big league level in the regular season. He logged a 2.20 ERA and a 16-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 16 1/3 innings pitched in the regular season. Sandlin was placed on the Injured List due to right elbow inflammation and eventually moved to the 60-day injured list in September.
There’s always a possibility of a reunion in free agency. But, for now, he’s heading to the open market and can be signed by anyone.
