Alex Rodriguez Admits His Friendship with Derek Jeter Was Strained “For Years” — All Because of One Magazine Article.vc

The infamous 2001 ‘Esquire’ interview, where Alex Rodriguez questioned Derek Jeter’s leadership, is now openly cited by both men as the “betrayal” that fractured their famous friendship.

For decades, the complex and often icy relationship between New York Yankees legends Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter was the subject of intense media speculation. Now, both men have openly admitted that their once-close friendship was indeed “strained for years,” pinpointing the exact moment the break occurred: a controversial 2001 magazine article.

What was once a “brotherhood” between two of the game’s brightest young stars was derailed by a few lines of print, a move that Jeter would later describe as a fundamental breach of “trust” and “loyalty.”

The Article That Broke the Friendship

The incident in question was a profile of Alex Rodriguez in the April 2001 issue of Esquire magazine. At the time, Rodriguez had just signed his record-breaking $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers, while Jeter was the reigning World Series champion and captain of the Yankees dynasty.

In the article, A-Rod, when comparing himself to his friend, made comments that were publicly perceived as dismissive of Jeter’s talent and leadership.

“He’s reserved, quiet,” Rodriguez was quoted as saying. “Jeter’s been blessed with great talent around him. So he’s never had to lead. He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second.”

Rodriguez continued, downplaying Jeter’s impact in the Yankees’ star-studded lineup:

“I mean, you know, hitting second is totally different than hitting third or fourth in a lineup… You go into New York trying to stop Bernie [Williams] and [Paul] O’Neill and everybody. You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern.”

The “Emotion-Filled” Fallout

The comments were a “bombshell” that immediately fractured their relationship. As both men confirmed in the 2022 ESPN docuseries, The Captain, the fallout was swift and severe.

  • Jeter’s Reaction: Jeter explained in the documentary that the quotes were an unforgivable violation of their friendship. “Those comments bothered me because, like I said, I’m very, very loyal,” Jeter said. “As a friend, I’m loyal… This is how the guy feels. He’s not a true friend, is how I felt. Because I wouldn’t do it to a friend.”
  • A-Rod’s Admission: Rodriguez, for his part, admitted to the fallout. He has expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging his “insecurities” at the time but also standing by the “comment” itself, even if he regretted the pain it caused.

Though Rodriguez famously joined the Yankees in 2004, forcing them to become teammates, the “strain” from that one article defined their relationship for years. They were professional colleagues who won a World Series together in 2009, but the close, personal friendship they shared in the 1990s was over—all because of one magazine article.
