Jasmine Crockett Just Dropped a Clue That Could Change Her Political Future.NH

Representative Jasmine Crockett said Wednesday she will “strongly be considering” entering the U.S. Senate race in Texas if she believes she can expand the electorate, telling SiriusXM’s The Lurie Daniel Favors Show that it would be “karma” after recent redistricting efforts in the state.
“If you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away. So we are, you know, the primary is the primary. That’s cool, but you got to win the general. So we are doing some testing here shortly to see if I can expand the electorate,” Crockett said.
Crockett said the “key” to winning in the state “isn’t about looking at the current electorate.”
“The question will be whether or not we believe that we’ve got enough juice to expand the electorate and looking at those cross tabs and looking at which demographics are more inclined to come out, who normally do not vote. If we can expand the electorate, then I will strongly be considering hopping in the Senate race,” Crockett said.
Why It Matters
Crockett, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2022, was named by former Vice President Kamala Harris as she discussed the future of the Democratic Party in a recent interview with the Associated Press. Crockett previously served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2021 to 2023.
If Crockett joins the Senate race, she would face several other Democrats who have already announced their campaigns to unseat Republican Senator John Cornyn. Texas state Representative James Talarico joined the race last month. Former U.S. Representative Colin Allred and astronaut Terry Virts are also running for the Democratic nomination.
A Democratic candidate has not won a statewide election in Texas in more than 30 years. Former Representative Beto O’Rourke came within 3 percentage points of defeating Senator Ted Cruz in 2018, but the margin of victory for Republicans has grown since then.

What To Know
Crockett said there is limited time to file to run for the upcoming election, as the court has yet to rule on whether the redrawn congressional map will take effect.

“We’re expecting that we’re going to get a court ruling here shortly on whether or not the lines go into effect for this election, Crockett said. “So the lines may stay like they are, which means nothing changes about my district. They may change to what was signed into law. And that means that I would be moved into another district.”
Crockett said her third option is to join the Senate race.
A poll conducted earlier this year by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which is supporting Cornyn’s campaign, found that Crockett led with 35 percent support among surveyed Democratic voters if she were to run.
Another poll by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs had Crockett leading the Democratic field with 31 percent, news station KTBS reported.
Cornyn is facing several challengers in the Republican primary for the seat, including Representative Wesley Hunt and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
