The Philadelphia Phillies are making moves. The organization has made minor moves recently, but they’re still intriguing additions.

First, the Phillies signed former Athletics top pitching prospect Colin Peluse to a minor league deal. Then, they brought in former Pittsburgh Pirates top prospect Liover Peguero on a minor league deal as well, per Phillies – A Fan’s View’s Steve Potter.

It’s not quite a Kyle Schwarber re-signing or a Kyle Tucker agreement, but these minor league moves could turn out to be low-risk, high-reward for the Phillies.

Phillies bring in versatile Liover Peguero on minor league deal

Peguero hasn’t had a ton of success in his opportunities in the majors, but he’s still only 24 years old. The Arizona Diamondbacks originally signed him as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2017 before the Pirates acquired him in a trade that sent Starling Marte to the Diamondbacks in 2020.

The Phillies, like every other major league team, value versatility. Peguero is as versatile as they come.

Peguero’s primary position is shortstop, but he has appeared at second and first base with the Pirates as well as third base and center field in the minors. Not only can he play all over the field, but he can do so at a high level.

Peguero isn’t known for his power at the plate, but he offers some pop in his bat at times. He’s best known for his speed and defense.

The Phillies don’t have a lot of room at the major league level in the infield. However, if Peguero can show more consistency at the plate, then he could have a role in the Phillies’ uncertain outfield during the 2026 season.

The talent is there. Peguero was among the Pirates’ top 10 prospects from 2020 to 2023, with his highest ranking being No. 5, per MLB Pipeline.

Peguero is a career .266 hitter with 62 home runs and 117 stolen bases in 591 minor league games. He’s played in 96 career games with the Pirates between 2022 and 2025, owning a slash line of .227/.278/.368 with a .646 OPS, six doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 36 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

It may be a stretch, but the Phillies may have found their next Edmundo Sosa. It certainly doesn’t hurt the team by bringing in a 24-year-old versatile player with major league experience.
