Not all losses are created equal. For the Philadelphia Eagles, blowing a 21-point lead to the Dallas Cowboys is about as rough as it gets. That was their reality in Week 12, though, and a major mistake on defense was a key cog in the defeat. The team crumbled late versus a bitter rival that they were favored to beat.

Michael Carter collided with Quinyon Mitchell on game-clinching play by George Pickens

Ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the Eagles traded for cornerback Michael Carter. It was a “need” sort of deal, due to Philly’s lack of depth at the position. They moved on from wide receiver John Metchie and swapped day three draft compensation. After the loss to Dallas, they may be a bit upset that they even made that trade.

Carter collided with CB Quinyon Mitchell in crunch time, which ended up allowing George Pickens to pick up a huge first down for the Cowboys. That play set them up for the game-winning field goal.

Of course, no one probably feels worse than Carter and Mitchell because of this gaffe. Both players simply did not see each other in time to move out of the way, and the Cowboys schemed up that play to create that sort of miscommunication and error for the opposing defense.

That being said, it is fair to project that Carter will be a notable piece of the Eagles’ defensive unit going forward. He is their most proven option in the slot if Cooper Dejean is forced to play outside due to other injuries or struggles in the secondary.

No matter what, the deadline deal for the Eagles bit back a bit in this loss, and the Eagles will be searching for answers heading into Week 13.
